Tomorrow would have been the day... 500 days uptime on my linux box! The day before yesterday, I checked the uptime the same as I had nearly every day for the last two weeks.... YES! Only 3 more days until I hit the magic number 500! A few hours later, I had that sweet uptime on my mind, so I checked it again (just to confirm that I wasn't dreaming)... 2:03 WTF??? The whole world around me seemed to freeze... I entered the uptime command again... 2:04 2 hours 4 minutes??? What the hell was going on? I checked the power, I check the connections, I checked everything..... What had happened??? How could my machine have possibly rebooted itself??? My mind raced as I tried to come up with a plausible explanation.... Had someone haXored my box? What kind of a sick *&$!#%& would hack a box and wipe out 497 days of uptime??? I spent the next hour going through the logs looking for some kind of evidence of unauthorized entry. There were tons of failed attempts and countless worms, but nothing indicated an intruder’s success. Could someone have gotten in and wiped any evidence from the logs??? hmmm....seemed like a lot of trouble just to deny me the pleasure of the 500 day mark. Finally, a quick search on Google provided me with the answers I was looking for.... As it turns out, the linux kernel has a bug... Needles to say, the party's cancelled. So, this is just a warning to everyone out there... If you're planning a 500 day uptime party, don't &*!%@ bother. - Razor |
