: : : : God, or the belief in 'a god', is what got the human race to where it is today,
: : : How do you figure it? I thought that technological innovation, exploration, exploitation of 3rd world labour and the advance of captialism has got us where we are today.

: : Exploration was mainly due to religion actually. You look at any piece of history, and usualy exploration had the same story...
: : 1. Country wanted to become powerful and rich
: : 2. King or Queen, wanted to lead that country
: : 3. The main belief at the time was that the more powerful your country was, the closer you were to god, of course you needed the first two things to achieve the third.

: Yeah, but it wasn't like the head of the church said "Go forth and bring back beaver tails from this new land". Well, unless we're talking about England since the king/queen is the head of the church there. :)

Yes, but exploration wasn't to find new resources either...it was to expland the borders of the country....it was the thing for countries to do...since england did it, france had to, which in turn spain had too etc etc....it just happened they fond resource..and went "fucking eh!"

: : Back in the day of exploration, you just look at the catholic church. They had such a strong grip over civilzation, it was crazy. Sure money and trade had a big role too, i'm not saying it didn't, but religion played a HUGE role just as well...and at times overshadowed many things..

: I agree with this.

: : A good example was the Holy Crusades.....those were based almost solely on religion...

: Yeah, but like a lot of things I think they hid behind religion to justify their actions. I hardly think Jesus would've approved of the massive wars over Jeruselem with thousands of deaths in his name, especially since he preached religious tolerance.

Yes hiding or not, religion did play a factor tho...even if it was for other reasons...when ya learn about it in school today, religion is the reason sorta thing

: : And take a modern day capitalist, Stockwell Day...hardcore Christian man...feverishly believes in religion...many capitalists do...

: Oh don't get me started on Stockwell. ;)

hahah i was hoping u would
