: If you had to discover everything yourself with NOBODY telling you anything, where would we be today? Every generation would have to start from scratch again...

Yeah, but what he said was that he would follow orders regardless of what he thought of them. We would have never invented anything and never evolved if we follow that line of thinking. Ever major inventor in the past few centuries has been rediculed, belittled, doubted, hell even proclaimed a witch by people who simply believed what they were told. Galilleo was excommunicated and lived the rest of his life in poverty, but people now aren't stupid enough to think the world is flat or the earth is the center of the universe. It's all about critical thinking, which is the opposite of what the army teaches.

: I think you're getting off on a tangent here, and into personal insults... the fact of the matter is that believing in something constitutes bias, Atheism also consitutes bias. Everyone is biased, and we can't help it, if we weren't it would mean we had no opinion or belief, and the only people in Canada that aren't supposed to be biased are Supreme court judges :)

Agreed. But at least admit your bias. "Sniper Wolf"/travis/whoever seems to just swear and insult when confronted with a thought out arguement, instead of replying with a rebuttal to problems he sees with that arguement. It seems to me that the most bias comes fromt he person unwilling to discuss other viewpoints.

: : I'd still like to know what brought this on in the first place as it's been quite a while before I made any religous comments.
: You're just so damn good at starting wars :)

True. I'd say you're a bigger troublemaker than me, and that's a big compliment! :)

: : Well you see the theory that scientific minds have is a theory that could have actually happened and is not something that was just told in a book.

: Scientific theory about the creation of the universe may make more sense to YOU, however a religios person may say that the bible constitues ample proof of what happened. In fact, logically, I would say that a written account of the creation of the universe which is sitting right under our noses is be better evidence than scientific theory based on guesses and possibilities.

I can't agree with this. Most of the stuff in the bible is alegorical, and especially about creation has been scientifically proven to be false. The Earth wasn't created in 7 days, Adam and Eve weren't the first animals on the earth, the earth isn't flat, it isn't the center of the universe, the heavens aren't fixed objects above the earth, etc, etc.

The major problem I have with organized religion is people who take things to literally, rather than simply as guides on how to behave and live your life. The bible (new testament at least) is a pretty good reference for how to treat other people. However, I don't think the stories should be taken literally. Jennifer took a religious studies class that was very interesting, in that the priest who taught it basically said that nothing in the bible should be taken directly literally since most of it was false. The priest then went on to point out discrepancies and direct impossibilities in the bible. I can't remember most of them, but a good one was how in the original hebrew, the word they use to talk about Mary means "young girl" in the context used, not virgin. The church later mistranslated it, and then based the whole mystical idea of immaculate conception around a mistranslation. Millions of people around the world now believe in the "virgin Mary", when in fact the original Bible doesn't even say that. Of course, this has led to the Pope's continued ban on birth control, which has resulted in huge population problems in a lot of 3rd world African countries, which are predominantly Catholic.

Gah... I didn't mean to get so worked up about this, as you may have noticed this kind of thing is a sore point with me. I can't stand religious leads who abuse their power or do things that run contrary to the values they claim to believe in.

: : Why don't you go start a holy crusade or something instead of wasting everybody's time throwing insults around in what was an otherwise well conducted argument.
: This arguement was never well conducted :) And I think Sniper Wolf has done a better job of containing himself than any of us have...

!!!! What are you talking about? This is the guy who said "Shove your statistics up your ass"! He has not addressed a single arguement of mine, he has simply resorted to name calling, swears, and insults. If anything, I'd say he's conducted himself the worst.
